The European Union has granted 570 million shillings ($6.4
million) to Kenya to boost food security in counties where
drought is ravaging crops, Kenya's Daily Nation reported
Thursday (September 11th).
The funds will benefit residents in more than 20 counties in
semi-arid areas, including Tana River, Baringo, Mandera,
Wajir and Garissa.
The money will be used as part of a multi-pronged
approach to counteracting the effects of drought, said Erik
Habers, head of development at the EU.
"The money will be used for emergency boreholes, building
more animal fodder stores and improving relations among
pastoral communities to prevent conflict," Habers said in a
statement.
The programme also aims to vaccinate 300,000 cattle
against foot-and-mouth disease and more than 1.5 million
goats against contagious caprine pleuropneumonia, in an
effort to ensure that the negative effects of drought are not
compounded by disease among livestock.
More than 150,000 cattle and 400,000 goats reportedly have
already been vaccinated in Baringo County alone.
