The Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba, has been
called upon to set up a special cattle and other animals
department within the police force that will check the
movement of animals, especially cattle from northern
Nigeria to other regions.
Retired Air Commodore Aliyu Abarshi, who made the call in
an interview with Daily Trust in Jos, said stringent
measures must be put in place by the police to check the
menace of cattle rustling through detailed and coordinated
actions.
Abarshi said: "Weigh bills should be introduced for the
movement of animals, particularly cows, whereby if an
individual is moving a number of cows for example from
Jos to Port Harcourt, he will have a document that will be
issued by the police here in Jos, either at the cattle market
or some office. The document should show exactly his point
of departure and his destination, the number of cows he is
carrying, the sex of the animals and the colour. If somebody
has this kind of document and he is supposed to move from
Jos to Port Harcourt, if he is found somewhere in Lagos, he
will be questioned."
"Cattle rustling is adding to the criminality of this country.
Imagine an individual who depends on cows and these
rustlers cart them away; what is he going to do? What will
his children do? It is even more serious on the children,
because they now turn to armed robbery or even Boko
Haram. Government needs to check this menace and the
police is the right organisation to do it," he added.
