Uasin Gishu Agriculture executive Cyril Cheruiyot has
warned of a food crisis due to poor rainfall.
Agriculture experts say there is an expected 40 per cent
yield drop, he said.
He addressed journalists in his office on Thursday.
Cheruiyot said maize yields have shown nutritional
deficiency.
He said the number of maize bags produced annually in the
county will drop from the 4.5 million in the last season.
Other counties that may record poor yield are Trans Nzoia,
Nandi, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Baringo, Nakuru and
Bungoma.
Maize production in Rift Valley last year dropped from 21
million bags to 16 million due to unreliable rainfall and the
maize lethal necrosis disease.
