NAROK widows trained on beekeeping #kenya

A group of 19 Maasai widows has benefited from a Sh200,000 beekeeping project at Maji Moto in Narok South subcounty. The Medungi Conservation women were trained on the modern ways of keeping bees so as to have quality product for a bigger market. Salaton ole Ntutu, the founder of the conservation, said the aim of the project is to empower the women and enable them sustain their lives. He said they received the funds from donors to help them start the project. The conservation director Stephen ole Kisotu said bees are natural resources, which should be utilised accordingly. He said beekeeping will help conserve the environment. Kisotu said Narok county is rich with the resource but people have continued to live in poverty because of lack of knowledge on how to nurture it. He said there is a need to train groups of people especially women to enable them engage in gainful economic activities. Sammy Bananah, who was training the women, said the county has different kinds of traditional trees with medicinal value and the honey produced by the bees will be of high quality that will be accepted in the market.
