The Transmission Company of Nigeria
(TCN) has said it will ration power across the
country for six days starting from today.
A statement by the TCN yesterday announced a
reduction in power generation by 400 megawatts
due to plant shutdown for maintenance by Shell.
'Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC)
will be carrying out scheduled maintenance work
on Okoloma Gas Plant which supplies gas to
Afam VI Power Plant, thereby leading to the
shutdown of the power plant, resulting in
nationwide power rationing,' the statement said.
The shutdown of Afam VI power plant became
necessary to allow SPDC inspect and carry out
routine maintenance work on the Okoloma
natural gas station in Afam, Rivers State, to
ensure its technical integrity. Maintenance work
on Okoloma gas plant, SPDC revealed, is
important to guarantee continuous and
uninterrupted supply of gas to Afam VI for
power generation into the national grid.
The TCN said it regrets the inconveniences the
six-day power rationing will cause all electricity
consumers nationwide.
The power rationing is coming barely two days
after the l takeover of major electricity companies
under the former Power Holding Company of
Nigeria (PHCN) by private investors.
