Alert issued on drought #kenya

Authorities in Garissa county have issued a
warning over an impending drought in the region
as a heat wave continues to ravage pastoralists
and farmers across the county. A "red alarm"
warning of the third highest level of risk from
drought has been issued in the pastoral areas of
Dujis, Modogashe, Balambala, Dadaab and Liboi.
Addressing the press in Garissa town yesterday,
county commissioner Rashid Khator termed the
drought as "escalating". He said so far there have
been no lives or animals lost as a result of the
drought.
Khator said the region, which is still recovering
from flood-related losses estimated at Sh1.2
billion, has seen about 30 per cent of its residents
already caught up in the drought. The alert
comes two weeks after the The World Bank
issued an alert of an impending drought that
might sweep through several African countries
including Kenya.
