Customs operatives attached to the
Federal Operations (FOU), Zone A, Lagos State
have impounded 1074 cartons of poultry
products worth N6 million.
The seizure was spurred by the renewed vigour
and determination of the unit to ensure zero
tolerance for the importation of prohibited items,
particularly frozen poultry products into the
country, it was gathered.
Comptroller of Customs in charge of FOU, Nuhu
Isa Mahmoud, in a statement said the arrest was
made on Sunday, November, 11, 2013, when
operatives of the unit were carrying out random
checks on items at about 15 minutes past
midnight.
He stated the detectives intercepted a DAF truck
suspected to be carrying contraband substances.
He said when the truck was searched, it was
discovered to have been laden with 1, 074
cartons of assorted smuggled frozen poultry
products valued at N4, 833, 000 with a Duty of
N966, 600 and a Duty Paid Value of N5, 799,
600.
The comptroller added that a patrol team led by
Assistant Comptroller Abdullahi Kirawa
apprehended the truck with the driver, who gave
his name as Mike Abram and one Mr. Richard
Ikhabuzor who was escorting the truck.
"It was trailed to Alaba International Creeks - via
Mile 2, before the interception. The remarkable
thing about the seizure was the fact that the
smuggled poultry products were concealed with
190 cartons of Viju and Bobo milk; which clearly
showed their intent to mislead security
operatives," he said.
He said the suspects will soon be charged to
court.
