Work on the N12
billion Galma multipurpose dam in Kubau Local
Government Area of Kaduna State has been
completed, an official has said.
Mr Sam Ode, the Chairman, Board of Directors of
the Upper Niger River Basin Development
Authority, said this in an interview with the News
Agency of Nigeria (NAN), after inspecting the
dam.
Ode said that the project, awarded by the Federal
Government, has a 250 million litre reservoir and
would supply water to the treatment plant that
serves the Zaria City Water Scheme.
According to him, the dam will also be used to
irrigate 2, 500 hectares of farm land in the
adjourning areas and generate 2.5 megawatts of
electricity.
``The dam will improve the quantity of water
supply for both domestic and industrial
purposes.
``It will improve agricultural activities like dry
season farming and fish farming as well as
improve power generation,” he said.
Also speaking, the Managing Director of the River
Basin, Prof. Paul Marley, said ``technically the
Galma dam is 100 per cent completed and
installations of the water machines would soon
be commissioned for use''.
Marley urged farmers to key into the irrigation
scheme to improve best agricultural practice in
Nigeria.
Meanwhile, the Emir of Zazzau, Alhaji Shehu Idris,
appealed to the government to speedily complete
the Zaria water supply project.
The royal father made the appeal when he
received the directors in his palace in Zaria.
``We hope the inadequate water supply in Zaria
and its environs would come to an end soon,”
the Emir said.
According to him, if the various government
projects in Zaria are fully completed and
inaugurated, it will solve the dearth of potable
water being experienced in the ancient city.
