The Sh8 billion fertiliser factory to be put up in Eldoret will
start production in two years.
The government identified land near Moi Barracks on the
Eldoret-Kitale road.
Toyota Tsusho Corporation of Japan, a partner in the
project, has carried out a feasibility study.
The fertiliser plant will be fully funded by the private sector.
Uasin Gishu Agriculture executive Dr Ambrose Cheruiyot
said the factory will cut costs of fertiliser by more than 50
per cent.
"The cost of farm inputs has been a major challenge to
farmers," said Cheruiyot.
He was speaking during an interview in his office
yesterday.
Plans for the factory have been discussed by Deputy
President William Ruto and leaders from Uasin Gishu
county, led by Governor Jackson Mandago.
They agreed that the project is key to cutting down farming
costs.
This year, the government distributed more than 152,000
tonnes of fertiliser to farmers through the National Cereals
and Produce Board.
Cheruiyot said they will partner with local universities to
ensure the factory produces fertiliser suitable for the region.
Excessive use of chemical fertilisers has been blamed for
most soils turning acidic, he said.
Mandago said farmers incur heavy losses because of
unpredictable markets and high costs of farm inputs
