The Government of Japan has released this year
Usd 1.2 million to reinforce the Angolan Government?s
integrated response to the drought affecting about 1.8
million people in the southern region since 2012.
The information was released on Tuesday in Lubango,
southern Huila province, by the secretary of the Japanese
Embassy to Angola, Yoshiko Miura.
According to the diplomat who travelled to Huila to assess
the drought programme in the region, stressed that the
funding was intended to back the implementation of
programmes for nutrition, health, protection and access to
drinking water.
Yoshiko Miura stated that the amount delivered to UNICEF
are helping improve the conditions of hygiene and
sanitation in the southern provinces of Cunene and Huila,
the most harshly affected by the drought that hit another ten
provinces.
The diplomat added that the programme focuses on the
promotion of a sound diet, screening and treatment of
severe malnutrition and administration of vitamin A
supplements.
She stated as well the programme is also meant to promote
awareness on practical health and hygiene practices to
prevent diseases transmitted through inappropriate water
and build up capacities of local people involved in the
protection of children from child labour, school drop-out,
negligence and violence.
