The government has deployed a team of experts from the
Agriculture ministry to help farmers control the spread of
Maize Lethal Necrosis Disease.
The disease has destroyed more than 15,000 acres of maize
farms in Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi and Uasin Gishu, raising
fears of reduced harvests this year.
The disease has affected farmers in counties. Agriculture
executive Stella Rono said the county will work with
officials from the ministry to educate farmers on how to
control the disease.
The symptoms of the viral disease include crop leaves
turning yellowish before drying up towards maturity stages,
shrinking cobs and failing to develop any grain while the
stem and nodes turn brown.
