An institute has released a new seed variety to curb the
spread of the maize lethal necrosis disease.
The Kenya Agricultural Research Institute's tolerant breed is
already in the market.
Agriculture Secretary Felix Koskei said the new breed is
meant for the middle level altitude areas.
It will help farmers in the drier parts of maize-producing
areas, he said.
Koskei was speaking at Chebaraa in Chepalungu when he
inspected agriculture projects on Saturday.
He appealed to farmers in the region to take advice from
agricultural extension officers seriously.
Koskei inspected the Chebaraa water irrigation project
being undertaken by the National Irrigation Board at a cost
of Sh280 million.
Once completed the project will serve 1,125 families in
Sigor, Kapkesosio and Cheleget locations, he said.
