HIGH levels of pesticides and other harmful products in the
country's fresh produce is caused by illegal trade in pest
control products, Agriculture Secretary Felix Koskei has
said.
Koski said many business peolpe are dealing in pest control
products that are not registered or verified by the regulatory
agencies.
"If you look at it well, the businessmen are selling
counterfeit products that has cost us a lot as a country,"he
said.
Early this month, the European Union banned the
exportation of fresh products from Kenya on accounts of
high levels of maximum residuals limits.
Koskei warned those trading in illegal products that they
will soon be "caught and stern action"taken against them.
"The government will not allow a few people to destroy the
market for the entire country. We shall crackdown on
you,"he said.
The CS also told the farmers to be careful when buying
pesticides to ensure they buy certified products.
He however said the government has held talks with the EU
to reconsider their decision of banning the country's
horticultural products.
