The Presidential Technical Committee set up by Goodluck
Jonathan to assess Federal Government's erosion projects
in the South East said the government had completed six
erosion control projects in the South Eastern part of the
country.
Mr Emeka Eze, the Director-General, Bureau of Public
Procurement (BPP), disclosed this to State House
correspondents on Wednesday at the end of the Federal
Executive Council meeting presided over by President
Jonathan.
Eze, the head of the committee, said that the six were in the
first phase of 15 projects awarded by the Federal
Government to tackle erosion in the zone while the
remaining nine were at various completion stages.
The D-G said that the committee visited the project sites in
the five states of the zone and wrote a report which he
presented to the council along with recommendations.
"The report that was presented to council today was as at
March 2013. At the time we visited the sites most of the
projects were at the levels of 55 per cent to 60 per cent.
"As at today, the first phase of that project which was what
we visited, virtually all of them have been completed.
"I can say about six have been completed, 100 per cent.
And the rest are at various stages of completion from 70 per
cent to 90 per cent of the first phase."
Eze added that all the issues militating against the
completion of the rest of the projects were highlighted and
appropriate recommendations made by the committee.
"All the issues militating against those projects have been
highlighted.
"The Ecological Fund Office, that is a member of the
committee, has started implementing parts of those
recommendations.
"As a matter of fact most of those projects have almost been
completed. Some are at various levels of completion, some
80 per cent, some 90 per cent at the first phase of those
projects.
"I am very certain that within the next two to three months,
phase one of those 15 projects would have been concluded
and Mr president would have, true to type, delivered on his
commitment to the South Eastern states.
"This is one of the states (regions) that is very dear to his
heart and he has demonstrated it in more action than words
through deployment of resources."
