Beekeepers urged to adopt new methods #tanzania

BEEKEEPERS have been urged to shun traditional beehives
which are hazardous to the environment and less profitable.
They have been advised to take on modern ones.
An in charge responsible for a beekeeping pavilion at the
Prisons Department here in Nzuguni grounds, Daniel
Luzwilo, told the 'Daily News' in an exclusive interview that
various researches have proved that traditional beehives
consume more materials than modern ones.
He added that one tree that is used to make one traditional
beehive, can be used to make five modern beehives. "That
is to say that to make five traditional beehives one will
need to cut down five trees but for modern ones only one
tree can make five of them," he said.
Mr Luzwilo noted further that modern beehives allow for
modern honey harvest that adheres to principles of
sustainable beekeeping.
"In the traditional harvest of honey, beekeepers burn bees
as a way of getting rid of them but modern beehives allow
for harvest of honey without killing the bees," he said.
He also noted that traditional beehives have less output of
honey not more than 10 litres per a beehive but the modern
ones can produce up to 18 litres.
In the pavilion, the prison is also showing modern
beekeeping methods that includes putting up artificial
ponds and cultivation of crops of which flowers are used by
bees to collect raw materials.
