The Minister of Agriculture Dr. Florence Chenoweth
yesterday was full of praise as regard the poultry industry in
the country particularly with improvement works at the
Obasanjo Farms Liberia Incorporated.
The improvement work at the farm is geared towards self-
sufficiency in poultry production in the country as being
disclosed by the agriculture minister.
Speaking during a visit to the farm Sunday, Minister
Chenoweth lauded the managerial team of Obasanjo Farm
Liberia Incorporated for the production of fresh eggs on the
Liberian market.
She said the production of eggs and chicken meat to the
market suggests that the country will soon be self-
sufficient in poultry product.
"As you can see, President Sirleaf through her good friend
President Olusegun Obasanjo decided to invest in the
country by opening a poultry farm that will produce chicken
meat and fresh eggs for the Liberian people and so our
President (Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf) made land available for
the farm; and today we are here once more so see for
ourselves the work they have been doing," she indicated.
Madam Chenoweth said the inauguration of the Obasanjo
Farm was a boost to the country's poultry industry and that
of Sierra Leone, and Guinea which receive supply in eggs
and chicken meat from Liberia as well.
Also speaking, Obasanjo Farm Liberia Incorporated General
Manager Jamiu Adeyemo explained that eggs for the poultry
are bought from the Hy-line International United Kingdom
African distribution center and the breed name of the chicks
is the Hy-line Brown.
Manager Adeyemo said the eggs brought into the country
take 21 days to hatch and when that is done, the veterinary
separates the crocket from the chicks.
He said the farm is currently producing 7,000 eggs on a
daily basis from pullet at its poultry site for the market and
plans are underway for production to increase to 25,000
daily.
He added that fresh eggs for the Liberian market are being
produced by the Ba Layer pullet.
Mr. Adeyemo further said 85 percent of the eggs are
consumed by Liberians and the remaining fifteen percent is
exported to Sierra Leone and Guinea, and noted that the
demand for brown eggs is high within three Mano River
Countries, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.
