Report calls for priority on good

The report by the county assembly Committee on
Agriculture and Environmental was drafted following a
recent tour of members to Israel.
Committee chairman Maurice Ondiek said the county faces
food shortage due to high poverty levels and failure to
embrace modern farming methods.
Ondiek said the county government should establish a fund
to finance the sector by supporting farming interventions.
He said the interventions should include enhancing farming
productivity through value additions, quality improvements
and marketing of agriculture products.
"The county executive should make policies such as
agricultural improvement and more research on crop
production to enable the county to have food security,"
Ondiek said.
Once such policies have been put in place, the county will
focus on both subsistence and cash crop farming.
This will impact positively on the economy by reducing
poverty and unblocking the county's potential in agriculture,
he said.
"Our desire is to have laws that will help the county grow by
reducing the poverty level," Ondiek said.
Central Nyakach ward representative Elijah Omondi said the
county has not achieved much in food production despite
devolution of agriculture by the national government
