The southern Mozambican province of
Inhambane is producing and processing fruit for the
international market.
According to Arsenio Antonio Cumbana from the agro-
processing company Mocambique Organica, the level of
fruit production in the district of Inharrime justifies the
decision to begin exports.
In Tuesday's edition of the daily newspaper "Noticias", the
company states that it is awaiting authorisation before
beginning to export chilli, orange, cucumber, mango,
pineapple and other fruit to the European and African
market.
Mocambique Organica, which operates in Nhacoongo in
Inharrime district, is awaiting international certification to
show that it is not affected by "fruit fly".
In addition, the company plans to add other fruit from
nearby areas, including mango from Morrumbene and
tangerines and oranges from Jangamo.
Cumbana added that the company is involved in providing
training and technical assistance to local farmers to
encourage the use of new production methods.
Mocambique Organica employs 92 local staff and provides
them with agricultural inputs so that they can be self-
sufficient.
The company operates over an area of 50 hectares. It has a
tank capable of holding 300,000 litres of water to supply a
drip irrigation system.
This enables the company to avoid depending on rainfall.
