South Mugirango sugarcane farmers have lost Sh35 million
in four months due to waste.
Kisii county assembly deputy speaker Evans Mokoro
yesterday said the sugarcane rot in the farms because they
cannot be delivered to Trans Mara Sugar Company in time.
Presenting a petition from the residents at the county
assembly, Mokoro accused the Sugar Company of sidelining
the locals in building a sugarcane weighbridge in his
Moticho ward.
He urged the assembly to protect the people, saying police
have been harassing them at the construction site.
"The weighbridge is being built by people from Trans Mara.
The residents need to be involved in the project," Mokoro
said.
He said the company also underpays farmers.
