STAKEHOLDERS in the agriculture sector in
Sumbawanga District, Rukwa Region, have been challenged
to learn more about provision of farming education to assist
in the development of farmers in the district.
The challenge was issued by Chanji ward councillor in
Sumbawanga municipality, Mr Felician Mavazi, when
opening a one-day seminar for members of the Farmers and
Pastoralists Civil Society (AMAWAWA) board organised by
the Foundation for Civil Society.
Mr Mavazi said AMAWAWA was among stakeholders who
were supposed to be in the frontline of educating farmers
and helping them turn from traditional to modem farming
methods.
He said a lot of farmers in the district were still using
traditional methods of farming which did not provide
bumper harvest despite using a lot of resources.
He added that there was very little information and
resources that reached farmers about modern ways of
farming, which was one of the reasons they were still
practising traditional methods.
He dded that those who were able to access such
information had turned their farming around by using
modern ways of farming.
Mr Mavazi noted that there were some investors who
owned big chunks of land in the region claiming to engage
in modern farming but actually ended up using the land for
other purposes including renting out portions or securing
loans from banks.
Earlier, AMAWAWA Chairman, Mr Oscar Msangi, said the
main objective of the seminar was to provide education to
farmers about modern ways of farming in order to increase
crop production and attract youth to engage in farming.
