Pleateau State distributes bags of fertilizers to farmers#nigeria

The Plateau State government says it has released 800,000 bags of fertiliser for disbursement to farmers in the state through the Growth Enhancement Support Scheme (GES). The state Commissioner for Agriculture, Steve Barko, who disclosed this on a radio in Jos said: "For the first time, we are going into the rural areas to disburse fertiliser. The farmers don't have to come to Jos; we are making sure that they get their fertiliser directly." Barko said the scheme registered 400,000 farmers, and that each of them will get two bags. On the issue of mechanised farming, he said: "We are trying to group the farmers together because most of them are into subsistence farming, but if we can group them together then we can go in there with tractors and we will be able to mechanise the farming for them." He said with the recent announcement by President Goodluck Jonathan to allocate N14 billion to dry season farming, "it has become necessary for Plateau farmers to ensure that they are registered."
