Baby dies as hunger strikes in Turkana #KENYA

2014 A child has died from kwashiorkor at Lodwar District Hospital, a health official has said. Turkana county nutrition officer Alice Jelimo said several patients suffering from malnutrition have been admitted at the hospital. She said many residents have faced starvation and lack of water in the last three months. Jelimo said the hospital records an average of 10 cases of severe acute malnutrition a month since October last year. She said previously, the hospital recorded less than five cases a month. Jelimo attributed the increased malnutrition cases to poor dieting. "Most of the parents tell us they don't have enough money to buy food to feed the children," she said. Jelimo said most children admitted at the hospital are diagnosed with diseases like kwashiorkor, marasmus, tuberculosis and HIV.
