outgrowers in Misenyi District have
appealed to the government to supply them with
subsidised fertilisers to boost production of the
crop.
The Secretary General of Misenyi Sugarcane
Outgrowers (MSOG), Mr Juma Abas, said over 50
small farmers had united and formed an
association which aimed to pull them out of
poverty. He said the farmers lacked enough
fertilisers, insecticides and had poor
infrastructure.
According to Mr Abas, the farmers were
demanding over 200m/- from the Kagera Sugar
Company for their sugarcane which was
delivered over three months ago.
The Acting Kagera Sugar General Manager, Mr
Vicent Mtaki, said the farmers were recently paid
over 1.3bn/-, adding that the remaining 200m/-
would be paid soon.
Meanwhile, Bukoba Auxiliary Bishop Methodius
Kilaini of the Bukoba Catholic Diocese and Bishop
Elisa Buberwa of the North-Western Diocese of
the Lutheran Church (NWD-ELCT) have appealed
to Kagera residents to celebrate the festive season
calmly and avoid evil acts.
The bishops made the appeal in their Christmas
greetings as millions of Christians the world over
prepare to celebrate Christmas in remembrance
of the birth of Jesus Christ who was born over
2,000 years ago.
Auxiliary Bishop Kilaini noted that Christmas
should make people turn over a new leaf and
thank God for His kindness.
