Nzoia to pay cane farmers #kenya
NZOIA Sugar Company MD has Saul Wasilwa
has blamed low sugar prices and cane poaching
for the woes afflicting the company. He said the
problems has led to non payment of farmers,
whose arrears have accumulated in the past three
months.
"The company is facing stiff competition
occasioned by infiltration of cheap sugar from the
Comesa region which has subsequently flooded
the local market," Wasilwa said. He added: "Local
sugar price is not competitive owing to high cost
of production."
Speaking to the Star at the company offices
yesterday, Wasilwa said Agriculture Secretary,
Felix Koskei will tomorrow launch the
programme to pay cane farmers their arrears. He
said the farmers will be paid Sh230 million of the
Sh300 million arrears owed starting tomorrow
