WORLD FOOD DAY NECCESSARY FOR FARMERS

The Director of the
Sean Devereux Children's
Education and Agriculture
Program (SDCEP), Mr. Amadu
Sarnor, is urging all Liberian
farmers, cooperatives, and
agriculturists to participate in
World Food Day celebrations to
learn new ideas, share
constraints, source partnerships,
and showcase outputs.
Speaking over the weekend on
the Sean Devereux farm in Bomi
County, 20 miles from Monrovia,
Mr Sarnor said: "World Food Day
is very necessary for all farmers
because it brings about a sense
of competition, showcases best
practices, and it increases
networking among all
stakeholders." Mr. Sarnor then
called on the Government of
Liberia through the Ministry of
Agriculture "to prioritize the
annual World Food program to
engender learning and
happiness among farmers. Let
the MoA take a lead in this and
make it a huge event for us all
like it is done in Ghana and
Nigeria, make it competitive with
prizes for best practices and best
farmers."
He said World Food Day should
be seen more as an event that
promotes large scale production,
boosting agriculture and making
it productive." He disclosed that
at this year's program, SDCEP will
be showcasing improved
varieties of rice they recently
harvested. "That's why the theme
for this year, 'Sustainable food
systems for food security and
nutrition', is very important for all
Liberians."
Located in rural Montserrado and
Bomi Counties, SDCEP is Liberian
agriculture, academic, and
vocational development
organization reaching over 1,000
beneficiaries mainly women. It
has over five hectares of lowland
and upland cultivated with rice,
vegetables, tubers, and fishpond.
SDCEP was founded in 1993 in
memory of the young British
humanitarian worker Sean
Devereux. Mr. Devereux worked
in Liberia prior to the civil war as
a Volunteer of the Salesains of
Don Bosco (Catholic)
Missionaries. In 1990, he started
working for WFP, and in 1993
was killed in Somalia while on a
Unicef mission. He was described
as "Soldier of Peace" who gave
his life serving others.
SDCEP currently works in
collaboration with LACE (Liberia
Agency for Community
Empowerment), World Food
Programme, Forum for African
Women Educationalists, Don
Bosco, Sean Devereux Children's
Fund UK among other partners.
