More than 90% of milk consumed is imported in #NIGERIA

Kaduna State Governor Muktar Ramalan Yero
yesterday expressed readiness to support and
partner the state's Cattle Breeders Association in
the area of milk production, saying 95 per cent of
milk consumed in Nigeria is imported.
The governor said this during the flag off of the
Growth Enforcement Scheme (GES) to dairy
farmers in the state organized by the Federal
Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development
(Federal Livestock Department) Dairy Value in
collaboration with the International Fertilizer
Development Centre (IFDC).
He lamented that milk production is low despite
the fact that there are about 16 million cows in the
country.
The governor, who was represented by state
Director Public Health in the Ministry of
Agriculture, Mr. Andrew Bahago, said there are
lots of firms interested in livestock, and that the
state is ready to partner them to enhance milk
production.
"We have partners that are interested in dairy
production and we are really in need of more
investors in the area. Kaduna State has an
institution that can help produce more milk in the
country," he said.
In his remarks, Minister of Agriculture, Adewumi
Adesina, represented by Director, Agricultural
Transformation Agenda, Mr Tijjani Isiayaku, said
the ministry selected Kaduna as one of those to
participate in the GES for dairy chain to strengthen
pioneering efforts on the use of milk cooperative
society to transform the dairy industry.
Earlier, Chairman, Cattle Breeders Association,
Aldo Ahmadu Sulaiman commended the state
and federal for the assistance.
