KENYA- Sh176m AVOCADO PROJECT FOR NAROK

FARMERS in Mulot in Narok
county are set to benefit from a
Sh176 million avocado project..
The project, which covers Mulot
and Longisa divisions in Narok
and Bomet counties respectively
will benefit more than 2,000
farmers.
The project will be funded by the
Songoroi Ltd, the Dutch Republic,
the Solodaridad, The Real IMP Ltd
and Olerai Ltd.
According to Songoroi Ltd
director Christian Bernard, the
first phase of the project began
in September last year when
farmers were trained on land
preparation and crop
management.
"The project aims at improving
the livelihoods of famers along
Mara River basin who have been
hit hard by the maize lethal
necrosis and perennial
droughts," said Bernard.
Speaking in Mulot on Tuesday, he
said the project will assist in
creating forest cover along the
basin. Bernard allayed fears from
farmers that there will be no
market.
He said the company has secured
an international market in
Europe and Dubai.
Benard said as a way of adding
value to the fruit, the company
intends to put up a factory at
Tibu Farm in Mulot from
September next year. The factory
will take two years to be
operational.
