Infected meat kills in kenya
A man has died and 12 others admitted to
Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital after
eating infected meat at a village in Nyeri county.
Five others were treated and discharged.
The 18 reported ate African sausage locally
known as Mutura and drank soup at a local eatery
named Ponda Mali. Public health officers from
Kieni East and Laikipia said the owner of the eatery
got the meat from two slaughterhouses in
Nanyuki town.
"It seems the meat got infected after it had left the
slaughterhouses. There have been cases of
severe diarrhoea and vomiting," said area public
health officer Michael Kahuthu. The first case of
food poisoning was reported at the Nanyuki
hospital on October 26.
The health officers who visited the area found the
soup kitchen closed down and the owner
missing. Kahuthu said the local administration is
organising a public rally to educate people on
proper hygiene.
He said the relevant authorities have been notified
and a notice to close down all dirty premises
issued. The process to prosecute the owner of
the premises was on cause, Kahuthu said.
