Helen Keller partners ECOWAS #sierra leone
Helen Keller International (HKI) has partnered with
the Economic Community of West African States
(ECOWAS), to boast food fortification in the
country.
Speaking at a press conference at their Tengbeh
Town offices in Freetown last Friday on the
regional Memorandum of Understating (MOU) for
food fortification between HKI and ECOWAS,
deputy Country Director, Dr. Sofia Goinhas said
since 2007, the organization has worked with
both the West African Health Organization and
West Africa Economic Monetary Union (UEMOA)
to fortify vegetable oil with vitamin A and wheat
flour with iron, zinc, folic acid and other B-group
vitamins in the region, under the 'Fortify West
Africa' initiative.
"These efforts have been made possible through
the support from the United States Agency for
International Development (USAID) and other
technical and financial partners," she said.
Dr. Bashiru Koroma, a lecturer at Njala University,
who chaired the event, also lauded the need for
food fortification and appeal to the health ministry
to ensure the initiative is a success.
Dr. Sarian Kamara of the Ministry of Health and
Sanitation pledged support for the HKI initiative,
as "food fortification reduces malnutrition."
