LAIKIPIA county has unveiled a
Sh600 billion five-year
development plan. The plan will
focus on dairy farming, tourism
and horticulture. The county will
also begin producing solar
energy. Governor Joshua Irungu
has said an international
company will work on the solar
project.
"We have already identified 100
acres where the solar panels will
be placed. It is a matter of time
before we start supplying 20
mega watts to the national grid,"
he said. Irungu said the
development plan caters for a
warehouse for storing maize.
He said a beef processing plant
will be built in the county. "This
county produces the best beef in
the country and we are working
with neighboring counties to
have our own processing plant,"
he said. The governor aid
tourism is also part of the plan.
Irungu said his governments is
working with owners of ranches
that have wildlife to ensure the
county earns revenue through
tourism. He was speaking to the
press during a two-day Laikipia
leaders meeting at a Naivasha
hotel.
Irungu said the county received
Sh2.5 billion against a wage bill
of Sh2.2 billion from the national
government. "We are committed
to improving the road system,
increasing power and water, and
constructing more schools," he
said.
He said Nyahururu town is in
Laikipia and dismissed politicians
from Nyandarua who claim they
had invested in the
infrastructure. County speaker
Patrick Mariro said the integrated
plan is ambitious but achievable.
"The challenges we have at the
moment is resources as the
county has lagged behind in
terms of infrastructure and
agriculture," he said.
